Bowen Island is a little pocket of bliss that lies just a 20 minute ferry ride from West Vancouver’s Horseshoe Bay. From enjoying craft ciders at one of the cideries to indulging in an incredible pizza from Tuscany, to just relaxing by the water... Bowen Island is where we go to recharge.
You really can’t go wrong wherever you stay, but we’ve found our own slice of Heaven with Reg at Wildwoods Cabins. When Reg greeted us with a smile and a bowl of eggs fresh from the chicken coop, we already knew we’d be coming back. The property features four cabins made of natural and charred cedar, each one stocked with a healthy amount of firewood to fuel the Jotul woodstove during your stay. Each cabin is also filled with unique collections of vintage books, boardgames, and knick-knacks, bursting with character. There is a yoga loft with sessions each morning, and a wood-fired sauna (our personal favourite after a cold plunge at Tunstall Bay). Reg considers himself a local guide, sharing his own extensive list of recommendations.
Our personal favourites include:
- Rileys Cidery: This place is equally quaint and impressive. Cider is my favourite drink of all time and this place offers some of the best. We had a delicious and informative tasting led by Frank, who made the experience 100X better. We went home with 2 bottles, and finished one that afternoon (whoops).
- Tuscany’s Pizza: Wow. I have been coming to this place since I was a kid and it has never lost its magic. The food is insane, with my personal favourite being their namesake Tuscany Pizza. Pear, brie, and caramelized onions… what more could you possibly want?
- Alder Cove Beach: Tunstall Bay is closer to Wildwoods, but Alder Cove Beach is our top spot by far. A beautiful quiet sandy beach awaits, and we even saw a mama deer with her babies on the walk down (Bowen is full of them but it will never get old to me).
We’ve stayed with Reg 3 times now and will definitely be back for more. It is the perfect weekend getaway when you need to take a breath and pull away from real life for a little while.
